Not Back to School: 5 Fun Ways to Celebrate Homeschool Freedom This Fall

September is just around the corner, and that means back-to-school season is in full effect! While many families are preparing for packed lunches and early wake-up calls, many homeschoolers are doing something different. We're celebrating Not Back to School!

For homeschool families, this time of year doesn’t have to mean a total overhaul of our schedules or the stress of the drop-off line. Instead, it’s a time to breathe deeply and enjoy the flexibility and freedom that homeschooling brings.

Whether you school year-round or are easing back into a fall rhythm, here are a few fun ways to celebrate the joy of not going back to school:

1. Plan a Weekday Field Trip

Visit a museum, nature center, park, or take a day trip on a weekday, when it's quiet and crowd-free. Enjoy short lines, discounted off-peak tickets, and room to roam. It’s one of our favorite perks of homeschooling! Visit our field trips page for more ideas or take a look at our Field Trip Road Trip ideas to attend a Homeschool Day in another town.

2. Have a “Not Back to School” Picnic or Play Date

Celebrate with other homeschool families by meeting up at a local park or indoor playground during school hours. Pack some treats, and raise a juice box to having a little mid-day weekday fun.

3. Ease Into Learning—Your Way

You don’t have to start with a full curriculum. Begin your homeschool year with a unit study, hands-on project, or field-based learning. Let the first week set the tone for curiosity, not stress. Bonus points for a fun breakfast or lunch treat!

4. Take a Back-to-School Photo Anyway!

Snap a picture of your kids holding a “Not Back to School” sign or even still in pajamas with their favorite book or project. It’s a fun tradition and a great way to mark the beginning of your year, your way.

5. Create a Homeschool Fall Freedom Bucket List

Instead of a back-to-school checklist, make a bucket list of experiences you want to enjoy this fall on your own time.

Ideas to include:

  • Visit an pumpkin patch on a weekday

  • Take a nature walk

  • Start a cozy read-aloud tradition

  • Bake something seasonal together

  • Volunteer as a family

  • Go to a local farm, garden, or fall celebration

  • Plan an outdoor lesson at the park
