Pumpkin Patch Playdates: Fall Fun Around Charlotte
Pumpkin season is here, and what better way to celebrate than with a pumpkin patch playdate? One of my family’s favorite fall traditions is spending the day on the farm, making it one of our favorite seasons all year.
Many farms around Charlotte feature animals, hayrides, play areas, farm-fresh treats, and more, making it the perfect place to gather with friends. Some farms even welcome field trips or fall homeschool days packed with educational activities and fun, all at a discounted rate.
Traditionally, Wise Acres Organic Farm has been our go-to pumpkin patch destination. However, this year, we decided to explore some of the other amazing farm options nearby. If you’re looking to combine hands-on learning with outdoor fall fun, take a look at our pumpkin patch round-up below.
Local Pumpkin Patches Around Charlotte
Hall Family Farm (Lancaster, SC)
A local favorite just south of the city, Hall Family Farm is known for its family-friendly atmosphere. You’ll find pumpkins of all sizes, hayrides, pedal carts, and a big play area that kids adore. It’s a great spot for homeschool families who want something close to home. Don’t forget to check out the upcoming Homeschool Days on the Farm for an exciting learning experience you won’t want to miss.
Wise Acres Organic Farm (Indian Trail, NC)
As mentioned above, this has been a family favorite since moving to Charlotte. Families can pick pumpkins, play on the swings, and enjoy a wagon ride. My kids can never get enough of the corn pit and kid-sized zip lines. It’s perfect for families who value fall fun, a convenient location, and a low-cost entry fee. Farm entry is by reservation only, so remember to plan ahead. Walk-ins are not accepted.
Carrigan Farms (Mooresville, NC)
Visiting Carrigan Farms has been on my bucket list for a while. From swimming in the quarry during summer to apple and pumpkin picking in the fall, I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this popular family destination. Families rave about the hayrides, beautiful location, and farm-fresh snacks. Pumpkin picking requires a reservation, so be sure to plan ahead for this Charlotte farm favorite.
Kersey Valley Maize Adventures (Archdale, NC)
Known for its giant corn maze, pumpkin patch, gem mining, zip lines, jumping pillows, and other kid-friendly play zones, it’s a little further drive, but totally worth it! We had the best time during our last visit, and I’m sure you will too. If you’re looking for a full-day family or homeschool adventure, this is a must to add to your list!
The Hunter Farm (Weddington, NC)
This family-run farm offers pumpkins, hayrides, and a small petting zoo. It’s a nice, simple outing for younger kids or small groups who want a laid-back experience close to Charlotte.
Hodges Family Farm (Charlotte, NC)
A working farm right in the city! Hodges Family Farm offers pumpkins, hayrides, animals, and wide-open spaces for active kids. They also host seasonal events and are a great destination for homeschool groups to play and learn.
Learning Ideas for Your Pumpkin Patch Playdate
As homeschool families, we know every outing can double as a learning opportunity. Consider these fun activities to add to your pumpkin patch experience before, during, or even after your visit:
Pumpkin Math: Estimate the size and weight of the pumpkins. Then weigh them and measure the circumference at home.
Pumpkin Life Cycle: Draw or discuss how pumpkins grow from seed to fruit.
Fall Scavenger Hunt: Look for things like a scarecrow, corn stalks, a tractor, a spider web, or a red leaf.
Pumpkin Science: Estimate and count the seeds, compare shapes, or test which pumpkins float in water once you’re home.
Creative Writing: Encourage kids to write a short fall story or poem inspired by their pumpkin patch visit.
Whether you’re planning a group adventure or a simple family outing, visiting a local pumpkin patch is a great way to embrace the season and make lasting memories. With so many fantastic farms around Charlotte, you’re sure to find the perfect spot for fall fun, learning, and connection. Pack a picnic, bring a friend, and enjoy all that pumpkin season has to offer!
